Best Contribution by a Team of Students

Highly Commended - Law Clinic Committee, University of Strathclyde

“Tailoring its services to members of the public within Glasgow and its environs who are not eligible for legal aid and cannot afford the services of a lawyer”

In its first five years the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic has handled just under 500 cases, with the annual intake constantly rising along with the complexity of the cases.

The work which the students do ranges from providing general advice for clients to entering into negotiations on their behalf and ultimately providing representation in Employment Tribunals and the Small Claims Court.

During the last year the Clinic has received support from large law firms and has also, over the years since its development, drawn up agreements with various other organisations to try to ensure effective working relationships, including the local CAB, from which it takes referrals in employment cases.

In addition, in the past year the Clinic has also begun developing an outreach programme which saw advice clinics piloted in an advice centre in the north of Glasgow where research indicated there was a shortage of legal provision within the community.
