With the end of the Brexit transition period looming, clinics may start to see an increase in queries from EU nationals who are concerned about their rights of movement and ability to remain in the UK. This InfoExchange provided clinics with information to help them to identify and triage client queries on this topic, as well as practical guidance about providing pro bono immigration advice and the EU Settlement Scheme.
James Sandbach, LawWorks Director of Policy and External Affairs, introduced the topic by giving an overview of the impact of Brexit on the free movement of citizens and the implementation of a new immigration system, including the introduction of the EU Settlement Scheme.
Next, Matthew Evans, Director at The AIRE Centre, provided an overview of their service and detailed how they provide free legal advice to individuals and other voluntary sector organisations in the UK on European Law. Matthew also explained the requirements of providing immigration advice under the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner. Finally, Matthew detailed their EU Settlment scheme, which enables EEA citizens and their family members to apply for an immigration status (settled or pre-settled status) that will allow them to live lawfully in the UK after Brexit.
