Volunteering opportunity
LSE Law Clinic is currently looking for solicitors and barristers with a current practising certificate with expertise in family or employment law to supervise LSE law students providing one-off written legal advice.
Trained law students will work in pairs to conduct fact finding interviews with clients. The volunteer lawyers will meet with the students before the client interview, to give guidance on the types of questions to ask. The volunteer lawyer will meet the students again after the client meeting to discuss the instructions obtained and to provide guidance on follow up research and issues to cover in the letter of advice. The students will draft a letter of advice which the volunteer lawyers will need to check before it is sent to the client. Letters will need to be sent within 14 days of the client interview. The volunteer lawyer does not need to sit in on the client interview with the students, although they would be welcome to do so.
Time commitment
The clinic will offer up to four client appointments on Wednesdays and Thursdays, either during the day or in the early evening. Ideally volunteers will be able to supervise one case every four weeks. The clinic will run in term time only – usually early October to mid-December, and late January to early April.
Location
It is expected that most client interviews will take place at LSE’s campus on Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London but we can offer online appointments where a client is unable to travel into central London. Students will be required to attend client meetings on campus, even if the appointment is online.
Person specification
Solicitors and barristers with a current practising certificate with expertise in family or employment law.
